Savoy Castle<\/strong> in Gressoney-Saint-Jean<\/strong> was built between 1899 and 1904 by Queen Margherita of Savoy<\/strong> as her elegant summer residence. The castle stands at the foot of Ranzola hill, in the place known as \u201cBelvedere\u201d, as it dominates the whole of the valley as far as the Lyskamm glacier. The Savoy castle in Gressoney-Saint-Jean has three floors: the ground floor, with living quarters, the noble floor, with the royal apartments and the second floor (not open to visitors), reserved for gentlemen of the court; the cellars are located underground.<\/p>\n The interiors feature ornamental paintings made by the young painter and restorer Carlo Cussetti and the boiseries<\/em> was realized by the wood carver Dellera, who supplied the Royal House.<\/p>\n The castle still conserves pieces of the original furniture coming from Villa Margherita, property of the Beck Peccoz Barons, in which the Queen stayed before the manor\u2019s construction. The masterpiece of the decoration is the elegant wooden staircase with griffins and eagles which leads to the royal apartments.<\/p>\n During the guided tour of the Savoy castle<\/strong> we will visit the ground floor and the first floor with the Queen\u2019s apartment that occupies the best position: from the windows of the delightful sitting room in the northern tower, you can enjoy the view of Mount Rosa and the entire valley.<\/p>\n The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park with a botanic garden<\/strong> hosting alpine flora.<\/p>\n I suggest to discover with me also the beautiful village of Gressoney-Saint-Jean<\/strong><\/a>, an alpine village that still conserves the traditional Walser architecture.<\/p>\n
\nThe castle, designed by architect Emilio Stramucci in neogothic style, consists of a central building embellished by five towers and a semi-circular veranda, which overlooks the Mount Rosa glacier<\/strong>.
\nIn 1936 the castle was sold to businessman Moretti and then bought by the Regional Council of the Aosta Valley in 1981.<\/p>\n
