Roman Road to Gaul
Aosta Valley hosts many Roman ruins … the main valley was intersected by the Roman Road to Gaul, which linked the valley to the Alpis Graia pass (Little Saint Bernard Pass) and to the Alpis Pœnina pass (Great Saint Bernard Pass); the road is still recognizable nowadays, and the most distinct section is situated between Bard, Donnas and Pont Saint Martin.
Pont d’Ael
Pont d’Aël aqueduct-bridge situated in the village of Aymavilles is the most important footprint of the engineering skills reached by Romans in the Aosta Valley.
According to the iscription on the northern front the aqueduct-bridge was built at the year 3 B.C. thanks to the private initiative.
The monument had a double function of bridge and aqueduct and was consequently built on two different levels: a drain for canalizing water in the upper part and a covered passageway in the lower section.
